The King of Chunky Choc Chip Cookies?

When I was at uni, I would buy Coles’ Ultimate Choc Chip Cookies whenever I needed to pull an all-nighter to write an essay. I don’t think they actually helped with my essays but I loved them all the same. I loved the big chocolate chunks and the hits of coconut. I haven’t had these cookies in a couple of years so I can’t say for certain if they’re any good or if nostalgia is just giving them a glowing review.

When I saw Woolworth’s had its own version of these choc chip cookies, called The King of Chunky Chocolate Chip Cookies, I thought, surely these have to be good, right?

Well, they’re not. They’re not bad, but they’re not amazing either.

The biggest problem with these Woolworth’s chunky choc chip cookies is the biscuit. There’s not enough butter in the dough to create an aromatic, caramelised biscuit. Usually when we bake cookies, we add a splash of vanilla and a pinch of salt to give the biscuit a bit of complexity. These cookies completely forgo those little details, which is disappointing. Texturally, I think they are just OK. They’re a bit hard and crumbly but also a little stale.

One good thing about these cookies is they have heaps of chocolate chips in them, and it’s a decent dark chocolate. Maybe they added all the chocolate to distract us from the lacklustre biscuit. Maybe the cookie has a lacklustre biscuit because they want to champion the chocolate.

A 310g box of these choc chip cookies will set you back $3.50, which I think is pretty affordable. They even suggest making an ice cream sandwich with these cookies, which I haven’t tried.

If you are looking for a chocolate chip cookie recipe that’s delicious and easy (no butter creaming!), I highly recommend June Xie’s ‘Anything Goes Pantry Cookies‘ from Delish, featuring lots of ways you can customise your cookies. I’ve made these a bunch of times and given them away as gifts.
